Qian Yi plays Cindy Feng, a professor’s trophy wife in stage director Chen Shi Zheng’s film debut, Dark Matter, starring Meryl Streep (Sophie’s Choice,Out of Africa) and Aidan Quinn (Desperately Seeking Susan,Legends of the Fall). Based on a true story, Dark Matter is about Liu Xing, a brilliant young Chinese astrophysicist, played by rising Chinese star, Liu Ye (Promise, Curse of the Golden Flower), who goes on a shooting spree after his American dream goes awry. In addition to her acting role, Qian Yi sings two songs in the film, including the final aria from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, sung in Chinese.
Dark Matter is an independent film, produced by American Sterling Productions and distributed by Myriad Pictures (The Good Girl).
Dark Matter was shown at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the2007 Alfred P. Sloan Prize.
Dark Matter had its New York premiere as the Centerpiece Presentation of the 30th Asian American International Film Festival. The film received the Best Narrative Feature Award.
Dark Matter screens in New York as part of “Film Comment Selects 2008” at Lincoln Center’sWalter Reade Theater. Dark Matter opens in theaters in New York on April 11 and subsequently in other American cities.
